MU 247 - American Music and Social Change This course explores how American music has been an agent of social change. Students will examine music associated with protest and social upheaval, exploring musical elements alongside the political and historical context, focusing on five themes: War, Race, Gender, Authority, and the Environment. Coursework includes weekly reading and listening assignments, projects, and class-wide discussion. Run as a discussion-based seminar, this class will at times deal with controversial issues and lyrics. Students will hear viewpoints different from their own, and will be exposed to the great creative and cultural diversity of the arts in the United States.
Note: Meets Aesthetic and Creative Engagement Learning Outcome (AEST) and the Citizenship Learning outcome (CITZ)
