FAS 212 - Illustration In this introductory course students will study a range of styles and objectives tackled by illustrators through the ages and by those in practice today producing work for both print and mass media. Through a series of practical assignments, students will explore a range of communication problems and solutions as encountered in various genres of illustration, such as children’s book illustration, character design, scientific illustration, editorial and advertising, giving students insights into idea generation, creative communication and problem-solving and exposure to the demands of a professional career in illustration or design.
Students will use a wide range media and visual communication strategies to communicate information, stories and ideas with immediacy in a clear, persuasive and visually impactful way. Illustration materials and techniques employed include traditional media such as drawing, painting, and collage. Students will also learn how to use contemporary design technology tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and professional scan, print, and photographic technologies.
