This course surveys living animal diversity, emphasizing the relationship between form and function. Laboratory exercises build skills in classification and anatomy through integrative study of prepared slides, dissection of preserved specimens and observation of live animals. Students focus their interest by choosing two taxonomic specialties and through a project extending class material to subjects relevant to the student’s major interest, such as medical or forensic entomology, parasitology, or model systems in neurobiology, ecology, genetics, development, etc.

Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory each week for one semester. Four credits.

Prerequisite(s): Prerequisite(s): BI 103 - BI 104 or equivalent as determined by Department Chair.
