MU 201 - Music History: Middle Ages - Bach and Handel This course covers the first half of a two-semester sequence in the history of music in Western civilization, examining the changing styles of European music from the emergence of Gregorian chant to the works of Mozart. Genres explored include plainchant, polyphony, secular song, the mass, madrigal, opera, oratorio, concerto, and symphony. Composers to be studied include: Josquin, Palestrina, Monteverdi, J.S. Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. (Formerly MU 341)
