PO 259 - Contemporary Christian Political Thought


This course surveys the variety of Christian understandings of politics that have developed in the wake of WWII. Readings will include primary texts by authors such as John Courtney Murray SJ, Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bryan N. Massingale,  as well as modern papal encyclicals such as Laudato Si and Fratelli Tutti.  The course concludes with a consideration of the rise and nature of political evangelicalism.  The course covers topics such as the best kinds of government, economics, racism, gender roles and sexual exploitation, human rights, and war.
