The Fine Arts Department offers majors in Art History, Music, Studio Art, and Graphic Design. Students may also choose to double-major in Music or Studio Art and Secondary Education to pursue teaching certification in Music or Visual Arts. In addition, the department offers minors in Art History, Music, Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Theatre Arts.
The study of art and music within the liberal arts curriculum at Saint Anselm College emphasizes critical inquiry and aesthetic appreciation, enables the development of analytical and technical skills, and fosters an understanding of the historical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of the arts. Fine Arts courses incorporate field trips to area concert venues, museums, and art centers, as well as master classes and hands-on workshops. Studio Art Majors exhibit their work in campus galleries, and Music Majors have opportunities for performance through curricular music lessons, the Saint Anselm College Choir, the Saint Anselm Pep Band, and other ensembles. All four majors feature an Immersive Experience Requirement, such as an internship, a study abroad course, community-engaged or service-learning courses, or independent undergraduate research. Internships are available in the Chapel Art Center and the Dana Center for the Performing Arts, as well as off-campus at local museums, galleries, advertising and graphic design companies, music businesses, and performing arts organizations. All Fine Arts students are encouraged to participate in concerts and art exhibitions, to attend events in the Fine Arts Lecture and Performance Series, to take part in workshops, and to join arts-related student clubs.
Majors in Art History, Music, Studio Art, and Graphic Design prepare students for a wide array of career opportunities in arts management and administration; arts education; museum, gallery, and curatorial work; digital and graphic design; visual communications and media marketing; and graduate studies in art history, museum studies, art or music therapy, studio art, music performance, and musicology. The academic rigor and liberal arts core of the Saint Anselm curriculum, however, enables our majors to pursue careers and achieve success far beyond the realms of art and music.
In addition to major course requirements, all majors complete the Fine Arts Senior Seminar, a Senior Thesis Project, and a Senior Comprehensive Examination. The Senior Thesis Project culminates in a research presentation, visual arts exhibition, or music recital, each representing achievement in a specific area of the Fine Arts. Double Majors and Minors within the Fine Arts Department and in other departments are permitted, but no more than two courses may be double counted toward both majors or minors (three in the case of Graphic Design; see below).
