Biology, BA and BS

The Biology major is designed for students wishing to explore life science at multiple levels ranging from the molecular to the organismal to the ecosystem level. The curriculum seeks to develop organizational and communication skills, critical thinking and the ability to synthesize information. Graduates of the program are well prepared to undertake advanced study in graduate, medical or dental school, or for a career in business or education. To assist students in selecting a balance of courses from several academic areas, each Biology major is assigned a faculty advisor with whom a close advisee-advisor relationship must be developed. Majors can choose between two degree options.

BA in Biology: The BA in Biology seeks to develop scientific literacy, critical thinking, and the ability to synthesize and communicate scientific information. Graduates of the major are suited for a broad range of opportunities including education, communication, business, and the health professions.

BS in Biology: The BS in Biology is designed for students interested in scientific careers involving bench work, or in preparing for graduate or professional school.  This major provides a broad foundation in the biological sciences, while emphasizing hands-on learning through intensive laboratory work and independent study. Students will gain proficiency in a broad array of techniques in contemporary Biology and employ those techniques in the process of scientific discovery. Graduates of this major are well prepared for advanced study in medical, dental, and graduate schools.

Students in either the BA or the BS program must also successfully complete a written comprehensive examination. The examination is the Education Testing Service Major Field Test in Biology and is administered twice annually, once in November and once in February.

With permission of the chair, up to 3 upper-level courses on topics other than those listed below may be transferred in from study abroad or from domestic institutions.
