The Africana Studies minor promotes interdisciplinary knowledge of the historical and contemporary perspectives of the peoples of the African continent and the African Diaspora. Today Africa has the largest number of countries in the world and is the second largest continent in terms of land area, population, and languages. Africans and outsiders have exploited its valuable material and human resources and have thereby contributed to the wealth and infrastructure of the contemporary world. Yet Africans and their descendants often have not received the credit they deserve for their many contributions to historical, intellectual, and cultural developments and social and political movements across continents. Africana Studies provides students with knowledgeable background from which to engage in difficult conversations today and to take actions to promote social justice and to pursue personal growth.h.
