English to Speakers of Other Languages/ESOL Minor and Licensure (K-12)


The ESOL minor is designed for students who are interested in pursuing ESOL K-12 licensure. The ESOL minor is paired with the Education Studies: Elementary Education major. ESOL candidates will have coursework, community engaged learning, and clinical experiences which emphasize elementary and secondary education. In ED255 and ED360 community engaged learning students are placed in an elementary school and in ED482 students are placed in a middle school and high school combined experience. Each placement will be in a school with an experienced ESOL certified teacher.

Passing scores on an ESOL test through Pearson is a requirement for licensure. The state of Massachusetts also requires passing scores on an ESOL MTEL.During advising meetings with your Education Department advisor, an individualized plan of study will be developed for each student. Refer to the plan of study for the timing of the courses. In addition to core and major requirements, the following five minor courses are required:
