BI 345 - Biostatistics


This course introduces concepts and techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics fundamental to the biological, environmental, and health sciences. Students gain a practical understanding of experimental design, data collection, data visualization, strength of evidence, statistical inference and drawing appropriate conclusions. Students also gain hands-on experience in applying statistical concepts and methods by running simulations, collaborating on group assignments, and analyzing data using available software programs (SPSS, Google Sheets, Excel). Examples used throughout the course are drawn directly from the biological and medical literature, emphasizing the value of statistics as a tool in learning about the natural world. This course is offered every fall and spring semester.

Note: Meets Quantitative Reasoning Learning Outcome (QUAN)

Three hours of lecture each week for one semester. Four credits.

Prerequisite(s): BI103 and BI104 or equivalent as determined by Department Chair.
