PO 258 - American Political Thought

Selections from a variety of authors, with special attention given to the Colonial documents, the Federalist Papers, and Alexis de Tocqueville. Additional readings survey American Political Thought from John Winthrop to Martin Luther King, Jr. We will explore a number of enduring political issues from these readings including federal-state relations, the role of government in the private sector, the relationship between liberty and equality, the American science of politics, the place of commerce and industry in a free society, the character of a free people.
