The Africana Studies minor promotes interdisciplinary knowledge of the historical and contemporary perspectives of the peoples of the African continent and the African Diaspora, including Black Americans. For decades, scholars have argued for a better appreciation of the economic, political, cultural, and intellectual contributions Africans and their descendants have made and continue to make to the development of the modern world. The African continent itself is the second largest in terms of land area, population, and languages, and has the highest number of countries in the world. Africana Studies provides students with perspectives necessary to engage in current conversations about Africa, the African Diaspora, and the United States of America and to take actions to promote social justice and to pursue personal growth.
