HI 391 - The History of Southern Africa This course will explore the history of South Africa and its surrounding countries, touching on issues of racial identity, economic change, political ideologies and gender. Areas of particular focus include the relationship between Dutch and British settlers, the great Xhosa cattle-killing of 1857, the “mineral revolution” and migrant labor, and the development of the apartheid system. The course will use a variety of sources-including literature and film-to examine what makes Southern Africa a distinctive cultural, political and economic space.
